In January, more than 3,500 journalists, media activists, and concerned people working for a free and independent press gathered in Memphis for the National Conference for Media Reform.
Their goal? In the very broadest sense, it is to take back the media from the mega-companies that now control most of what we see, hear and read. And ultimately to strengthen the third pillar of democracy -- the independent press.
Part 2 of this Link TV special features "Bill Moyers: Take Back The Media Before It's Too Late," the legendary journalist's keynote speech at the conference. Moyers warns that the independent press is under sustained attack with a few corporations conspiring with political leaders to create an Orwellian world “in which language conceals reality, and the pursuit of personal gain and partisan power are wrapped in rhetoric that turns truth to lies and lies to truth.”
Moyers also spoke about Net Neutrality, the idea that all websites regardless of size and funding will be treated equally by service providers in terms of content delivery speed. “We now have it in our means to tell a different story from Big Media,” he said. “This is the great gift of the digital revolution and you must never let them take it away from you.”
The special will also feature a discussion with Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, about whom Moyers says, "Amy doesn't practice trickle-down journalism. She goes to where the silence and she breaks the sound barrier."
