In early 2007, two groups dedicated to consensus building came together with a belief that the U.S. urgently needed to improve relations with the global Muslim world, while also enhancing U.S. security.  Together, these groups launched the U.S. - Muslim Engagement Project with a goal of delivering recommendations for a new strategy to improve relations.

To drive this project, the USME recruited a 34 member Leadership Group, including a former Secretary of State, former members of Congress and experts from business, faith communities, foreign policy and related fields. This Leadership Group was convened by The Consensus Building Institute and Search for Common Ground.

The Group met periodically over 20 months.  Link TV filmmakers joined the Group for its final meeting in June, 2008 where members discussed, disagreed and ultimately came to conclusion on a final set of recommendations to set the U.S. on a new course with the global Muslim world.  The final report of the U.S.-Muslim Engagement Project will be released on September 24, 2008 with an eye toward providing the next U.S. president with a blueprint for change and a safer world.
