This installment of Earth Focus provides a special look into Studio of the Sea, a group of biologists equipped with camera equipment that are studying the underwater effects of global warming on coral reefs in Phoenix Island, a sparsely populated chain of atolls in the Pacific Ocean. Their footage provides insight into the delicate balance of underwater ecosystems, as well as the devastating effects of even the slightest temperature changes on the health, size and vibrancy of the "rainforests of the sea."
The Planetary Coral Reef Foundation's crew has been working off the research vessel, the RV Heraclitus, for more than 12 years, which is the only ship continually at sea studying coral reefs on a planetary basis. According to PCRF's findings, two-thirds of the world's coral reefs and their ecosystems are at risk for devastation due to climate change, pollution and other harmful underwater trends.
Other segments in this Earth Focus broadcast include: a look at the dangers facing wild horses in Palomino Valley, California; a report on a growing number of commercial bottle water companies, such as Ethos and Belu, that donate a portion or all of their proceeds from sales to global causes; and a startling exposé on annual seal hunting in Canada and a resulting boycott against Darden Restaurants, the multi-billion-dollar company that owns Red Lobster, and the entire Canadian seafood industry.
For more information:
Planetary Coral Reef Foundation: http://www.pcrf.org
Oceana: Protecting the Oceans: http://www.oceana.org/north-america/home

Journalist Mark Hertsgaard interviews 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai.
The Honorable Professor Maathai is the first woman, the first Kenyan and the first environmentalist to win the prize. She was selected for her role in founding the Green Belt Movement, which for nearly 30 years has sought to empower women, improve the environment and fight corruption in Africa. She also won acclaim for her campaign to fight deforestation by planting 30 million trees in Africa, making her Nobel Peace Prize the first to acknowledge environmentalism as a means of building peace through pre-empting conflict over increasingly scarce resources.
She is Kenyan by nationality, a biologist by training, an activist by occupation and now a member of the government in Kenya as Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources.

This episode of Earth Focus features three special segments.
We start by interviewing Russell Peterson, the former director of the Council on Environmental Quality during the Nixon and Ford Administrations, and a former Republican Governor of Delaware, who has written a book that blasts the environmental record of President George W. Bush. The book, "Patriots, Stand Up! This Land Is Our Land; Fight to Take It Back," accuses the Bush Administration of broadly deceiving the American people, not just about the environment, but about the war in Iraq, terrorism, and the economy.
This interview is followed by two in-depth reports. The first is on Perchloroethylene, or perc, the chemical solvent used by most drycleaning stores, that may cause cancer and and has been a public health concern since the late 1970s. The Environmental Protection Agency calls perc "moderately toxic" to humans and classifies perc as a water and air pollutant. Until recently, there were few alternatives to perc for people looking to clean clothes with tough stains or made with fine fabrics. But now, new green garment cleaning technologies are taking the perc, and the dirt, out of clothes.
We end by visiting the site of the Embrey Dam, built in 1910 by the city of Fredericksburg, Virginia to harness the power of the Rappahannock River. The dam was breached recently when explosives planted by the Army Corps of Engineers blew apart its concrete walls. The historic event drew a crowd of thousands from the Fredericksburg area who came to witness the spectacle and to celebrate the environmental restoration of their community's river.
